Dedicated servers in Estonia: providers compared

Who rents dedicated servers in Estonia, and how do they differ?

Four providers with an Estonian company and a published Estonian dedicated server offer are covered here: Zone.ee, WaveCom, HostSlim and EstNOC. They differ on three things that decide the choice: whether the server is managed or bare-metal, how much hardware and network detail is published, and what support is promised.

Zone.ee is the only one of the four that sells a managed dedicated server (Zone runs the operating system platform); the other three hand you the machine and you run it. WaveCom and HostSlim publish ports up to 10 Gbit/s or more, EstNOC publishes monthly traffic allowances, and Zone's published packages run on a 1 Gbit/s port. All four publish a price list or price page, so compare costs on their own pages.

How do the Estonian dedicated server providers compare?

The table lists what each provider publishes on its own product page. An empty answer means the page does not state it, not that the feature is missing.

Which provider suits which buyer?

No provider here wins on every criterion, so the rules below follow what the pages publish. Pick the criterion that matters most to you and read down.

  • If you want someone else to run the operating system, backups and monitoring, then choose Zone.ee's managed dedicated server; the other three list management only as an upgrade or do not label it. Managed servers on Zone have no root access, which is the trade-off.
  • If you want full root access on an Estonian-run bare-metal machine with daily support hours that match office hours, then Zone.ee's bare-metal packages and WaveCom both fit.
  • If you need a port faster than 10 Gbit/s, then WaveCom is the only one of the four that publishes 25, 40 and 100 Gbit/s ports.
  • If you want a published SLA, DDoS protection and IPMI-style remote console on every plan, then WaveCom lists all three on its plans; HostSlim lists DDoS protection, IPMI/KVM and a 99.9% network uptime figure. Neither page gives SLA credits, so ask before you sign.
  • If your traffic is one-directional and mostly inbound, then HostSlim's free unlimited inbound traffic and 1 Gbit/s outbound included matches that pattern; outbound upgrades are priced on its page.
  • If you need a Tallinn server plus the option to run the same stack in other countries from one supplier, then EstNOC lists more than 30 locations; check traffic allowance (30 TB/month on its HPE plans) and its overage terms.
  • If you want to pay by crypto or bank transfer, then HostSlim and EstNOC list those payment methods; WaveCom and Zone.ee do not state payment methods on the pages read.
  • If you only need to house your own hardware, then a rented server is the wrong product: Telia Eesti offers equipment hosting for your own servers in its cabinets.

How do you choose a dedicated server?

A dedicated server is worth choosing when one tenant needs a whole physical machine; the specification sheet then decides whether the machine is the right one. Check these items in order and compare them across the product pages above.

  • CPU. Core count helps parallel work such as virtual machines and databases; a higher clock helps single-threaded applications. The four providers publish Xeon and AMD EPYC options.
  • RAM. HostSlim lists ECC memory; ask the other providers if you need it. Size RAM to the working set of your database or number of virtual machines, and check the maximum the chassis takes if you may grow.
  • Storage. NVMe is faster than SATA or SAS SSD; RAID protects against one disk failing but is not a backup. Zone.ee backs up managed servers daily and does not back up bare-metal ones, so plan your own backups on any unmanaged server.
  • Bandwidth. Separate the port speed (for example 1 or 10 Gbit/s) from the traffic allowance (for example 30 TB per month, or unmetered). A fast port with a small allowance can cost more in overage than a slower unmetered one.
  • DDoS protection. Look for protection that is included and on by default; WaveCom and HostSlim state it, Zone.ee and EstNOC do not on the pages read.
  • IPMI/KVM access. Remote console and power control let you reinstall or recover the server without a visit. Zone.ee uses Fujitsu iRMC, WaveCom uses HPE iLO5, HostSlim and EstNOC offer IPMI/KVM over IP.
  • SLA and hardware replacement. Ask what the provider promises if a part fails and how fast. A stated uptime percentage without credits or terms is a marketing figure, not a guarantee.
  • Location and latency. A server in Tallinn keeps the network path to users in Estonia short, while a server in another country adds distance and delay. If most of your visitors are elsewhere in Europe, weigh that against the location.
  • GDPR and EU. Keeping personal data of EU customers in an Estonian data centre under an Estonian or EU company keeps the data in the EU; confirm in the contract who the processor is and where backups are stored.

When is a dedicated server better than a VPS or cloud server?

A dedicated server gives one customer a whole physical machine, so performance does not depend on neighbours; a VPS or cloud server shares a physical machine between customers and is cheaper to start and to resize. Providers such as Zone.ee sell both as separate products.

  • If your workload needs steady high CPU, large RAM or fast local disks all day, then a dedicated server fits.
  • If your load changes a lot or you need to scale in minutes, then a VPS or cloud server fits better, because you pay for what you use.
  • If you run a small website or a test project, then neither is needed; hosting or a small VPS is enough.
  • If you must control hardware-level settings or install your own hypervisor, then a bare-metal dedicated server is the option that allows it.

How were the providers compared?

Each row of the table comes from the provider's own website: the product page, its help or terms pages and its contact details. A provider was included when it had a company address in Estonia or an Estonian data centre, a rentable dedicated server offer and a public page we could read.

Telia Eesti was left out because its page offers equipment hosting for your own hardware, not rented servers. Veebimajutus.ee lists hosting, domains and e-mail on its home page and no server product. Hosthink sells dedicated servers in Tallinn but does not state a company address or country on the page we read, so it is not listed as an Estonian provider.

The table shows only what the pages state, in the order of the columns. Prices are not copied here because they change; every provider's price list is on its own page. Providers are not ranked, and the recommendations above follow single criteria. The links in the table lead to the providers' own product pages.
